Nabors Invests $35 Million in Quaise as PACE-B Rig Drills Project Obsidian

Allstream Insiders Summary

Nabors Industries has completed a $35 million strategic equity investment in Quaise Energy and established a framework that includes an exclusive arrangement for Nabors to provide drilling services supporting Quaise’s geothermal projects. The transaction makes Nabors Quaise’s largest shareholder, with a 14% fully diluted ownership interest, according to Nabors.

The investment is part of Quaise’s $180 million Series B financing round. The $35 million should therefore be treated as Nabors’ contribution to the larger financing—not as an additional amount on top of the $180 million.

The relationship has already moved into field execution. Nabors said one of its PACE-B land rigs is drilling at Quaise’s Project Obsidian in Oregon. The planned first phase targets 50 megawatts, while Nabors said subsequent phases are targeting up to 1 gigawatt of additional capacity.

Nabors said Project Obsidian is intended to become the first commercial deployment of a superhot enhanced-geothermal system. Those capacity figures remain company development targets rather than completed generating capacity.

Nabors-Quaise Agreement and Project Tracker

Item Confirmed detail Reported status
Nabors strategic investment $35 million in Quaise Energy Completed, according to Nabors
Nabors ownership 14% on a fully diluted basis Nabors becomes Quaise’s largest shareholder
Quaise Series B $180 million total, including Nabors’ $35 million Final close announced August 27, 2026
Drilling-services framework Exclusive arrangement for Nabors to provide drilling services supporting Quaise geothermal projects Framework established
Current field activity Nabors PACE-B rig drilling at Project Obsidian Confirmed in Oregon
Project Obsidian first phase 50 MW Planned company target
Later development Up to 1 GW of additional capacity Subsequent-phase target described by Nabors

What Does the Strategic Framework Cover?

The confirmed framework gives Nabors a direct drilling-services position in Quaise’s geothermal development program. Nabors described an exclusivity arrangement under which it would provide drilling services in support of Quaise geothermal projects.

The companies also expect to evaluate additional areas of collaboration, including:

  • Drilling-system integration
  • Rig engineering
  • Field deployment
  • Drilling automation
  • Global geothermal project development

Those additional areas are matters the companies expect to evaluate. They should not be presented as separate completed contracts, project awards or committed work programs.

Quaise’s companion announcement said the broader framework spans drilling operations, technology integration and commercial development. It also gives Quaise access to a dedicated land rig and Nabors’ platform for reservoir modeling, well design and drilling strategy.

How Does Quaise’s Drilling System Work?

Quaise is developing a hybrid drilling platform that combines conventional rotary drilling with high-power millimeter-wave technology designed to access deeper and hotter geothermal resources. Nabors describes the system as gyrotron-powered, with millimeter-wave energy transmitted downhole through a waveguide to ablate rock.

Quaise says the approach is intended to reduce reliance on complex downhole equipment in extreme-temperature environments. Nabors said Quaise is integrating the technology with established drilling practices, infrastructure and supply chains.

Nabors’ announcement confirms that a PACE-B rig is currently drilling at Project Obsidian. It does not state that the current drilling activity is already using Quaise’s millimeter-wave system. The Series B proceeds are intended in part to continue developing that technology toward depths greater than 5 kilometers, according to Quaise.

What Is Nabors Doing at Project Obsidian?

Nabors has a current field role through the deployment of its PACE-B rig at Project Obsidian in Oregon. This is the clearest operational component of the announcement and separates the relationship from a financial investment alone.

Nabors describes the planned first phase as targeting 50 MW. Its release refers to subsequent phases targeting up to 1 GW of additional capacity, but that larger figure is a future development target and should not be treated as capacity currently under construction or financed by the $35 million investment.

The two announcements do not assign a construction cost to Project Obsidian or state how much of the $180 million Series B will be allocated specifically to the power plant. Quaise said the proceeds will support both Project Obsidian and continued commercialization of its millimeter-wave drilling system.

What Does the Agreement Cover for the Upstream Supply Chain?

The Nabors-Quaise relationship applies conventional drilling and well-construction capabilities to a geothermal development program. The current PACE-B rig deployment and the exclusivity arrangement for Nabors drilling services are confirmed. Other areas remain under evaluation.

The companies identified the following current or potential areas of work:

  • PACE-B rig operations at Project Obsidian: Confirmed by Nabors
  • Drilling services supporting Quaise geothermal projects: Covered by the announced exclusivity arrangement
  • Reservoir modeling, well design and drilling strategy: Included in the Nabors platform that Quaise says it can access under the framework
  • Drilling-system integration, rig engineering, field deployment and automation: Identified by the companies as areas they expect to evaluate
  • Global project development: Identified as another area for evaluation

The evaluation categories are not separate completed contracts or contractor awards. The reviewed announcements do not identify public bid packages for third-party work.

Allstream Perspective

Nabors’ investment provides an example of an established drilling contractor using its upstream equipment, engineering and automation capabilities in an emerging geothermal market. The transaction gives Nabors an ownership position in the technology developer, while the exclusivity arrangement and active PACE-B deployment establish a more direct operating role.

For drilling contractors and oilfield-equipment suppliers, the most relevant near-term development is the Oregon field program—not the longer-range gigawatt target. The current release confirms a Nabors rig at the site but does not report commercial operation, successful deployment of millimeter-wave drilling at depth or construction of the full generating program.

Future company disclosures that would materially clarify the development include results from the Project Obsidian drilling program, confirmation of millimeter-wave field deployment, additional well plans and any expansion of Nabors’ role beyond the current rig and drilling-services arrangement.
