Enbridge is shining a light on the future of clean energy with its latest solar venture. Case in point—the recent official groundbreaking ceremony in Callahan County, Texas, the future home of the Sequoia Solar Project.
This 815-megawatt project is set to become one of North America’s largest solar installations. Once fully operational in late 2025 to early 2026, Sequoia Solar will harness the power of the Texas sun to provide sustainable energy to AT&T and Toyota through long-term power purchase agreements.
“The Sequoia Solar groundbreaking ceremony marks a pivotal step forward for Enbridge as we continue to power the energy evolution. With proud collaborators like AT&T and Toyota by our side, this will be one of the largest solar projects in North America,” said Matthew Akman, Enbridge’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy and President of our Power group. “This project exemplifies our commitment to providing our customers with the types of energy they need now and in the future.”
Sequoia Solar is located southeast of Abilene, Texas—about a two-and-a-half-hour drive west of Dallas. The project will utilize approximately 5,300 acres of what today is mostly non-arable land and, at completion, will consist of about 1.8 million solar panels.
Demand for energy is soaring globally, and power purchasers are increasing the procurement of renewable energy as part of overall energy strategies. For Toyota, Sequoia adds to other solar and wind projects and virtual purchase power agreements that the auto giant has pursued to accomplish one of its global Environmental Challenge 2050 goals—to achieve carbon neutrality at all of its North American facilities by 2035. AT&T, meanwhile, will use the power to offset its energy expense and reduce its carbon footprint.
