NeuVentus Expands Texas TRU Hub Phase 1 to 28 Bcf Across Three Salt Caverns

The Liberty County natural-gas storage development’s first phase is now planned around three salt caverns, 28 Bcf of working capacity and a 35-mile header with 10 proposed pipeline interconnections.

Allstream Insiders Summary

NeuVentus has expanded the scope of the initial natural-gas storage phase at its Texas Reliability Underground, or TRU, Hub in Liberty County, Texas. According to the company’s October 13 announcement, Phase 1 is now planned to include three salt caverns, increasing projected working-gas capacity from approximately 20 Bcf to 28 Bcf.

NeuVentus said the revised initial phase is expected to increase injection capacity from 600 MMcf/d to 840 MMcf/d and withdrawal capacity from 1,200 MMcf/d to 1,680 MMcf/d. The project also includes a planned 35-mile, north-to-south natural-gas header designed with 10 interconnections to inter- and intrastate pipeline systems.

What changes in the TRU Hub’s initial storage phase?

NeuVentus said the initial phase under development will now include three natural-gas storage caverns. The company presented the expanded configuration as a response to demand from LNG, power and gas-marketing customers for flexible storage service along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Initial-phase measure Reported earlier figure Expanded figure reported by NeuVentus
Working-gas capacity Approximately 20 Bcf Approximately 28 Bcf
Injection capacity 600 MMcf/d 840 MMcf/d expected
Withdrawal capacity 1,200 MMcf/d 1,680 MMcf/d expected

The capacity figures describe the initial phase’s revised configuration. They should be read as NeuVentus’s project plans and expectations rather than operating storage capacity already in service.

How the planned header would connect the storage system

The initial phase includes a large-diameter natural-gas header extending 35 miles north to south and planned with 10 interconnections to inter- and intrastate pipeline systems. NeuVentus describes the header and its interconnection design as a central part of the TRU Hub’s ability to serve multiple gas-supply and demand points.

The October announcement establishes the number of planned interconnections but does not identify individual connecting pipelines, interconnect locations or commercial counterparties. Those details will be important as the project advances from its revised storage configuration toward physical delivery.

Why NeuVentus links the expansion to LNG and power demand

NeuVentus said LNG facilities and peaking-power demand can create sharp changes in natural-gas demand, increasing the value of high-turn, flexible storage. The company specifically pointed to the Texas Gulf Coast, where it said supply and demand sources are developing in parallel.

Salt-cavern storage is commonly used where customers need rapid injection and withdrawal capability. In this announcement, NeuVentus framed the additional cavern and higher planned deliverability as a way to increase the scale available for tailored storage solutions and pipeline connectivity.

Allstream perspective: Phase 1’s storage and deliverability are moving together

Allstream perspective: The notable feature of the update is that NeuVentus is enlarging both the working-gas inventory and the planned injection and withdrawal capabilities of Phase 1. The three-cavern configuration and 35-mile header show that the project is being developed as a connected storage-and-deliverability platform rather than as a standalone cavern asset.

For the midstream market, the key confirmed information is the revised storage capacity, planned flow capability and 10-interconnection design. The announcement does not identify awarded engineering, construction or equipment packages, so it should not be interpreted as evidence that individual supplier scopes have been released.
