Ascension Clean Energy (ACE) is leading transformative clean energy projects in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Developed by Clean Hydrogen Works (CHW) in partnership with ExxonMobil, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Hafnia, the ACE Project is poised to become one of the world’s most cost-competitive, low-carbon clean ammonia producers. Located at RiverPlex MegaPark in Donaldsonville, the project capitalizes on its strategic location, offering access to CO2 pipelines, the Mississippi River for shipping, and deepwater docks for large tankers. The facility will produce 2.4 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of clean ammonia in its first phase by 2029, with plans to expand production to 7.2 MTPA in subsequent phases.

CHW recently awarded the front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract for the project to McDermott, a globally recognized leader in mega-module construction and energy transition solutions. The scope of McDermott’s work includes FEED, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) planning. The project is supported by carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) agreements with ExxonMobil, advanced off-take discussions, and financial guidance from Goldman Sachs. Regulatory approvals are anticipated by early 2025, with a final investment decision expected later that year.

The ACE Project brings significant economic benefits to Ascension Parish. It is projected to create 350 permanent jobs, 1,500 peak construction jobs, and an additional 1,200 indirect jobs. According to CHW Senior Vice Presidents Johnny Cook and Vee Godley, the collaboration with McDermott strengthens the project’s competitive advantages, including its ready infrastructure and shareholder expertise in CCS and maritime transport. CHW emphasizes its commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and community engagement.

The facility’s design incorporates innovative technologies to minimize carbon intensity and enhance operational efficiency. Its location on the west side of the Mississippi River ensures access to resources such as water feedstock and shipping routes, making it a key hub for clean ammonia production. As global demand for clean energy solutions grows, the ACE Project represents an important step in positioning Louisiana in leading sustainable energy initiatives while supporting the region’s economic growth.
