ExxonMobil Advances Low-Carbon Ammonia in Baytown, Texas

ExxonMobil is making significant strides in low-carbon energy solutions with its planned low-carbon ammonia facility in Baytown, Texas. This initiative is particularly crucial for industries facing challenges such as limited access to renewables, space constraints, or geology unsuitable for carbon capture and storage. With ammonia’s versatility in power generation, the company is addressing the increasing need for lower-emission fuels and feedstocks.

The Baytown facility will leverage differentiated natural gas from the Permian Basin to produce low-carbon ammonia at scale, making it one of the largest projects of its kind. A final investment decision is anticipated later this year, solidifying ExxonMobil’s commitment to innovative lower-carbon solutions. The company has already signed a Heads of Agreement with South Korea’s SK Group, marking a potential supply deal that reinforces the global interest in low-carbon ammonia as a viable energy source. This project not only strengthens supply reliability but also offers a scalable solution to industries looking to transition to cleaner energy.

With mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining operational efficiency, ExxonMobil’s low-carbon ammonia presents a reliable pathway for industries in manufacturing, power generation, and transportation. By integrating carbon capture and storage technology, the Baytown facility will significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with hydrogen and ammonia production. ExxonMobil’s comprehensive approach includes technical analysis, regulatory guidance, and economic assessments to help customers seamlessly adopt lower-carbon solutions and navigate the energy transition.

The Baytown facility is expected to become the world’s largest producer of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia, meeting the rising demand projected by the International Energy Agency. With carbon capture rates of approximately 98%, this project exemplifies ExxonMobil’s ability to deliver a practical, scalable solution for carbon reduction. As the final investment decision approaches this year, the company remains poised to lead the industry with a commercially viable, lower-emission energy alternative that integrates seamlessly into existing infrastructure.
