Homer City Redevelopment Taps EQT to Power Nation’s Largest Gas-Fueled Data Center Campus

Homer City Redevelopment (HCR) has reached an agreement in principle with EQT Corporation to exclusively supply natural gas to its 4.4-gigawatt power facility, the backbone of the upcoming Homer City Energy Campus in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Announced via a press release, the agreement marks a major milestone in the transformation of the former Homer City coal-fired power plant into a cutting-edge AI and high-performance computing (HPC) hub, one of the largest projects of its kind in North America. The gas-powered data center campus, spanning 3,200 acres, is expected to come online in 2027.

Under the agreement, EQT will unlock a natural gas supply of up to 665,000 MMBTUs per day, with sourcing redundancy from both the Texas Eastern Transmission and Eastern Gas Transmission and Storage pipeline systems. This transaction stands as one of the largest single-site natural gas purchases in North American history. “EQT is synonymous with Pennsylvania energy and American innovation, and we are thrilled to have them as a partner for this project,” said Corey Hessen, CEO of HCR, in the press release. “This agreement ensures long-term energy security for the data center campus, while demonstrating our commitment to powering the future with Pennsylvania gas, Pennsylvania power and ultimately, Pennsylvania data centers.”

EQT Corporation President and CEO Toby Z. Rice added, “This project is a win for Pennsylvania and for America. We are proud to be named the exclusive partner to provide the energy needed to power the Homer City Energy Campus and the future of AI.” The project is being financed by Knighthead Capital Management, which has held equity in Homer City for nearly eight years. Andrew Shannahan, a Knighthead partner and board member of HCR’s parent company, emphasized the project’s role at the intersection of traditional energy and next-generation technology, calling the EQT partnership “another key component” in advancing construction and eventual operations.

Construction on the facility is being led by Kiewit Power Constructors Co., a top-tier EPC contractor. Earlier the same day, GE Vernova announced it will provide seven of its high-efficiency 7HA.02 natural gas turbines for the power station, with deliveries beginning in 2026. Once complete, the Homer City Energy Campus is expected to be the largest natural gas-powered data center campus in the U.S., exemplifying a bold new model for integrating digital infrastructure with legacy energy redevelopment.
