INGLESIDE, Texas, – 21st March, You can learn the mathematics of a heavy lift in a classroom, but you can’t feel the ground shake until you stand in a working fabrication yard.
This week, State Service Co., Inc. (SSCI), a premier Gulf Coast EPCI and modular fabrication contractor, opened the gates of its massive 70-acre waterfront facility in Ingleside, Texas, to a visiting cohort of engineering and technology students from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
The on-site visit was designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world industrial execution, giving the next generation of energy professionals a frontline look at how complex offshore platforms, midstream modules, and pipeline infrastructure are actually built.
Experiencing the Scale of Modular Fabrication
During the comprehensive facility tour, the students stepped out of the classroom and onto the 2,000-linear-foot load-bearing bulkhead along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. SSCI leadership walked the students through the entire lifecycle of a Turnkey EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation) project.
“We love hosting the students because it’s a chance to show them the reality of the energy sector,” said Tim Little, President of State Service Co. “In a university, you study the drawings. Out here in Ingleside, we show them what it takes to turn those drawings into a 400-ton process module. We want them to see the logistics, the cranes, the welding technology, and the sheer scale of what it takes to de-risk a major capital project.”
The students were given an up-close look at:
- Heavy Lift Operations: Understanding the physics and safety protocols behind moving massive modular structures using SSCI’s 500+ ton capacity cranes and SPMTs (Self-Propelled Modular Transporters).
- Integrated Integrity (FIS Division): A deep dive into how pipelines and pressure vessels are rigorously tested (hydrostatic and pneumatic) and cleaned before they ever leave the yard.
- The Waterfront Advantage: Learning why direct deepwater access is a critical logistical strategy that eliminates road transport limits and accelerates offshore commissioning.
Safety First: The “NO ONE GETS HURT” Culture
Before stepping foot into the active fabrication areas, the students received their most important lesson of the day: Safety. SSCI leadership introduced the students to the company’s deeply ingrained “NO ONE GETS HURT” doctrine, explaining that in heavy industrial construction, a culture of safety is the foundation of every successful project.
Beyond the safety protocols, the real eye-opener for these future engineers was seeing the full spectrum of modular fabrication in motion.
State Service Co. remains committed to partnering with local universities and trade schools to support STEM education and develop the highly skilled workforce required to power the future of the Gulf Coast energy sector.
